For better or worse here comes GRATEFULSOFT:

The cause of the rift between surviving members of the
Grateful Dead that has kept them apart since Fall of
'98 is finally coming to light. Indications are that
Phil (Lesh) disagrees with other surviving members about
the 'corporate existence' of The Grateful Dead. Despite
all the speculation that included rumors of a disagree-
ment over guitarists, it seems that business/money is
the driving force behind the separation.

The board of Grateful Dead Productions, which includes
the surviving members, CEO Peter McQuaid, and others,
is considering a deal with Microsoft that would hand
over the contents of the vault. The Grateful Dead
would therefore no longer own their own music and
would not have control over the future of the music
(ready to hear Truckin' on a Ford commercial?).
