My question is -- is there a clear advantage to
either approach based on cost or other considerations
or should we hedge our bets in this high stakes game?

SiC is much cheaper than sapphire based leds.
sapphire is brighter.
cree improved their SiC brightness 400% this year. at the shareholders meeting a few weeks ago, cree ceo said he believes they can close the gap within a year.

you are right ge does have a thing going with emkr. i have very little info on that. cree has a thing going with siemens/infineon (the european ge) and osram (the european light bulb mfr).

cost is everything in this market. SiC based will rule imo especially if the brightness gap is closed. in the meantime cree has more business than they can handle. the reason i am so hot on cree is they only get 50% of their revs from leds...the other markets for SiC are more lucrative and exploding too.

imo nobody is going very far with SiC production without bumping into cree's patent portfolio.

this is a helluva investment area we are in.
early too!
:o)
