Exactly, Tom. Sell high, then buy back in low. That's how I rate my success too. It's not so much "how much money did I make on this buy and sell transaction?" as it is "how many extra shares did I earn by selling when prices were high and buying back in at a lower price?" If I wasn't able to buy back in at a lower price, then my exit from the market was in error. But if I exit at S&P500 1440 and buy back in at S&P500 1290, that's a successful transaction, because now the same amount of money owns a lot more shares. The cliche really should be "sell high, buy low", not the other way around.

Wow, didn't those NASDAQ cows take a turn today? Suddenly it's all ok! But realistically, there should be a lot of cash coming into the market in the next month (profit sharing, year-end bonuses, etc.). Today's turnaround suggests to me that indeed we will experience a wonderful November - January "Effect" this year, substantially exceeding the historical gains over the past 30 years.
