Thanks John, a very informative commentary. No substitute yet for a talented and experienced work force. It also may explain something I read on the Alcatel thread about someone who is technically savvy having trouble installing DSL:

DSL Install Update

Beginning Weds., I went thru numerous installs with 6 different versions (that's right, SIX) of the Alcatel/Efficient Networks SpeedStream DSL modem software. BellSouth is apparently changing versions on the fly. In a word, a MESS. And telephone support is a nightmare, but that's a different story.

Anyway, by Friday (after many calls to technical support), I supposedly got the correct version of software from a download from the Efficient Networks site.

Guess what? The Central Office DSLAM (Alcatel)for my Central Office has been down since Thursday afternoon (per Technical Support), so I could not connect. Today (Sunday), it is still down, with no time to repair known. That is, BellSouth's DSL service for some Atlanta Central Offices has been down for 3 DAYS! They are telling everyone to use their dial up backup service.

Sounds like a DSL nightmare.

Michael
