The backbone of the internet is pretty much composed of 1) the physical telecommunications lines that make up the Internet 2) Piering points where all network traffic from all of the internet backbones (or telecommunications lines) meet and 3) actual network traffic.

For the most part, UUNet is the porche of the internet in terms of bandwidth, customers, traffic and piering points.
