Internet May Hurt Industrial Distributors' Profits, WSJ Reports

Lake Forest, Illinois, Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- W.W. Grainger Inc. and other industrial distributors' shares have risen as investors become excited about the Internet's potential for these companies, yet some wonder if the Internet will hurt or help profits for the distributors of light bulbs, construction supplies and other products, the Wall Street Journal reported in its ``Heard on the Street' column. Skeptics believe the Internet is better for customers than sellers, especially when the sellers are middlemen between manufacturers and buyers as middlemen get squeezed by the Internet. Robert Baird analyst Jeff Germanotta said on Jan. 11 the market didn't recognize the value of Grainger's expansion onto the Internet, and Grainger said it doesn't believe profits will get squeezed by the Internet, the paper said.

Grainger, which sells more than 550,000 repair and maintenance items, warned earlier this month fourth-quarter earnings might miss estimates because of higher costs and inventory troubles.
