BHE upgraded ... SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25 (Reuters) - Robertson Stephens analyst J. Keith Dunne said Tuesday in a research note that he raised the rating on Benchmark Electronics, Inc. (NYSE:BHE - news) to buy from long-term attractive.

--``We believe that the first quarter of 2000 should reflect improvements, following initial disappointing results from the acquisition of AVEX in August 1999,' said Dunne.

--``Over the past few years, many electronics manufacturing services companies have been impacted by short-term events, only to emerge as stronger companies. We believe Benchmark will also emerge from the AVEX acquisition a stronger company and should report improved financial results and additional important customer awards in the coming few quarters. For example, we believe the company has recently won two multi-hundred million dollar awards for medical and hi-end computing products.'

--``In addition, we are increasing our earnings-per-share estimates to reflect an industry trend towards Cash earnings-per-share, versus GAAP earnings-per-share. Our Cash earnings-per-share estimates are $1.13 for fiscal 1999 and $1.60 for fiscal 2000.'

-- Benchmark shares were up 3-3/16 at 27-5/16 in early afternoon trading.
