Brian,
Re: Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) - A specialized IC smart card used in mobile wireless telephony.
I need to correct something from a previous post to you. Also, as I have received several PM's asking questions about the SIM I will add additional posts in the future on the subject of the SIM card, linking back to this one.
My primary interest in SIMs is the potential for its use in CDMA. The lack of a SIM in that technology has prevented its adoption in or interoperability with the predominant wireless technology in the world, GSM. This is barrier to a potential revenue stream for Qualcomm, a company that is one of my core investments. In addition the role of the SIM has important ramifications as a facilitator of wireless data services, and this has many additional investment implications, beyond Qualcomm.
Here is the statement I would like to correct:
<< Dr. Klaus Vedder of Orga chairs SMG9. The new development I spoke of is that 3GPP2 (cdma2000 oriented) has just transferred responsibility of UIM specification development to SMG9 for all ITU2000 UIM specification development. This indicates that there will in fact be a UIM in all 3G flavors. In addition this development could work its way backwards to 2.5G or even 2G cdma wireless >>
Dr. Klaus Vedder Klaus is not employed by Orga, he is employed by Giesecke & Devrient a currency engraver and smart card manufacturer. He is the Chair of ETSI SMG9 & 3GPP T3 which are the primary standards groups that maintain and evolve the standards for a SIM card in mobile wireless telephony. Yesterday the SIM card was a mandated component of GSM, today it is about to appear in TDMA, ESMR, and tomorrow it will appear in CDMA, and the groups chaired by Dr. Vedder will coordinate all standardization efforts for SIM cards regardless of technology to insure global interoperability and global roaming.
Dr. Vedder has been involved with the evolution of the SIM since the mid 1980's when the Groupe Spécial Mobile (GSM) was doing early development of the GSM standard.
