Recently Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. reported that: "Driven by strong sales in Europe, the worldwide chip card market reached $1.4 billion in 1997, and the market is forecast to continue to show strong growth with revenue reaching $6.8 billion in 2002 ..." In October 1998 Microsoft announced "Smart Cards for Windows", a standards-based platform that provides secure storage for security, loyalty and ePurse solutions in the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) operating system that is focused on delivering benefits of Windows-based development and run-time environments to the smart card industry. Since then, IBM, HP, and Dell have all announced that they will be equipping various models of their computers with smart card readers.
