If you are interested in high speed access I would have to say the most recent form is ASDL. More companies are beginning to market it as the phone companies are beginning to upgrade to be able to receive high-speed transmission from almost any ASDL connection from any home. Another benefit from ASDL is you can get rid of one phone line (if you want) because you can surf and talk at the same time on one line. This is done by providing ASDL on the higher-bandwidth of the telephone line, leaving the lower-bandwidth for speaking etc. A few ISP's such as Mindspring and Broadband Digital Group (www.freedsl.com) are beginning to offer these services around $50.00 a month.
I suspect you know that AOL and Time Warner merged which means soon AOL will be providing cable service. Cable is a totally different service which uses your TV cable to connect to the internet. It is about as fast as ASDL an is a little cheaper. Although, cable does require a second separate TV line to run, which would be about an extra $11 a month to run. My conclusion is cable is something to look out for because it hasn't really made its way into the market and ASDL is just right now the best form of high-speed access.
Note: ASDL requires an small filter which can be easily installed by anyone between the wall and phone jack.
