<< you'd have to suspect Perry LaForge no-show reflects frustration and pique with a delayed or scuttled agreement >>

Smacks of rudeness to me.

The applicable text of the only news I can find (what I already posted) is:

<< LaForge had been expected to brief reporters on a variety of issues; including the CDG's frustration at being denied membership in 3GPP and the CDG's initiatives regarding CDMA-GSM roaming ...... And the CDG is irritated that 3GPP; the 3rd Generation Partnership Project which is creating specifications for the evolution of MAP-based architectures, has denied the CDG entry as a Market Representation Partner because it apparently feels the CDG's views are not applicable to the project at hand >>

The history of this is here:

3gpp2.org

My take on the matter has been that 3GPP which includes GSM & TDMA constituents (with 400 subscribers, almost 400 network operators, and a truly global footprint, Korea aside for the moment) is basically saying to the CDG (with 50 million subscribers, 70 network operators, and little or no presence in many parts of the globe): Look Mr. LaForge, cdma2000 is wonderful, but we are embarked on a separate path and have been evolving a 3G specification for much longer than you have. We have a lot to solve relative to backward and forward compatibility with our own 2G & 2.G networks so we honestly don't have the time to worry about backward compatibility with cdmaOne networks as well. We will Mr. LaForge, work out elements of convergence and harmonization in Ad Hoc Committee. We need to take standardized 3G to market in this decade. We have heard you tell us that we can't live without cdma2000. We have examined your rationale and simply don't buy it. And, oh by the way, our present path to 2.5G does not include a cdma air interface at this time so please go peddle cdma overlays elsewhere.

Thats just my take. Others can interpret as they choose.

I don't know what this has to do with his "no show" at the World Congress. All of the above He had accepted an invitation to attend. I am not even sure he went to Asia.

We think Europeans have an attitude about Americans. I spent 4 years working for a European company, and I admit they have an attitude. Having visited Europe a number of times, I am inclined to think we have earned every bit of the attitude they possess.

I view Perry's decision to back out of attendance as not positive for Qualcomm investors.

Qualcomm exhibited at World Congress for the first time. I thought something positive would come of it. There is nothing on the CDG board about the Congress or Perry or Terry's planned visits.

Qualcomm made 3 press releases during GSMM World Congress:

* Feb 3 2000 eQ-COM Signs Data Services Agreement with Vodafone Airtouch
* Feb 2 2000 QUALCOMM and Ericsson Develop Bluetooth CDMA Solutions
* Feb 2 2000 QUALCOMM Forms eQ-COM

None of these Press Releases were made out of Cannes.

My personal feeling is that Qualcomm squandered an opportunity. One might ask, who has the attitude?
