Certain firms have certain agreements with certain mutual funds. Not all firms carry all mutual funds. Your term "load sharing" is not only accurate, it is an amusing way to describe it. Most big name firms do business with enough funds so that an investor that can do a minimum amount of homework can find a good one...but don't expect the broker to find it. Most borkers wouldn't know a good fund if it walked up and bit them on their wallet.

The broker in question was probably not interested in handing out advice to a cleaning lady that has a few grand in a mutual fund. No commission potential.

There ARE good brokers out there. The best way to find one is by word of mouth, from somebody who knows the difference.

As far as cold calls, my favorite retort is the "Jerry Seinfeld"...ask the person for their home number and when they eat dinner because you want to call them at home around dinner time.

When they say they don't give out their home number, you say "That's exactly how I feel!"

Best legal ploy: ask for the broker's name, the firm he works for, (they are required by law to tell you) and the name of the Compliance Officer, make a note of that information, and then tell the broker that you want to be put on the 'Do Not Call' list.

If any broker from that same firm ever calls you back, you can sue the firm and win.
