New Filter Systems Offer 30 Times Improvement

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Conductus, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDTS), a leading manufacturer of superconducting wireless systems, announced today that its new ClearSite© 2G Superconductor System now has selectivity or filter sharpness 30 times better than the previous ClearSite system. The announcement was made at the Cellular Telephone Industry Association's CTIA 2000 Trade Show in New Orleans. ClearSite 2G Systems are specifically designed to protect 2G TDMA, GSM, and CDMA networks which are more sensitive to interference than 1G analog networks. Conductus began shipping these ClearSite 2G Systems in Q4 1999 to multiple customers.

"We believe that our ClearSite 2G System is the most advanced thin film superconductor system available for the U.S. market today," said James P. Simmons, Jr., Vice President, Marketing and Sales. "As a result of new engineering designs and manufacturing improvements, we have verified that our new ClearSite 2G Systems have 30 times better selectivity or filter sharpness than our previous systems. Recently announced ClearSite trials demonstrated the sensitivity of TDMA and especially CDMA networks to interference. A recently announced CDMA trial showed that strong interfering signals can cause a CDMA cellsite to virtually collapse, to only 2% of its original capacity and coverage area. Our ClearSite system restored the cellsite to its original performance level before the interfering signals were present. Conductus models predict that the additional selectivity provided by ClearSite 2G Systems can protect a high capacity CDMA carrier from a greater number of interfering signals, leading to significant improvements in capacity.

"Major carriers agree that superconducting wireless systems must have four characteristics before they will be widely deployed in their digital networks: ultra-high RF filter selectivity or sharpness, high reliability, compact size, and a clear upgrade path to future digital wireless technologies (2.5G, 3G). We are pleased to be able to enhance our competitive position in the RF selectivity area without any compromise in the other three areas.

"Based on these performance criteria, we believe that our ClearSite© System is the overall performance leader. Our technical team's ability to develop and manufacture these improved ClearSite 2G Systems results from Conductus' continued focus on developing and shipping the highest performance wireless products. Over the years this emphasis on performance has influenced our decisions in numerous technical areas, including superconducting material, substrates, operating temperature, coolers, design techniques, and fabrication process technology. We believe these choices have resulted in a significant competitive advantage in overall system performance."

During the past year traffic on wireless networks has greatly increased, resulting in coverage, radio frequency (RF) interference, and capacity problems in current generation, digital (2G) wireless networks. Many industry experts predict these problems will get worse as new higher bandwidth (2.5G and 3G) wireless Internet services become available. ClearSite superconducting wireless systems can expand coverage, reduce interference, and increase capacity for analog (1G), digital (2G), and next generation high bandwidth digital (2.5G and 3G) wireless networks. In previous field trials ClearSite systems have increased cell site minutes of use and thus revenues by 30% to more than 50% in coverage applications for 1G and 2G networks, and have increased capacity at 2G TDMA networks by 80% and 2G CDMA networks by a much greater amount.

About Conductus

Conductus, Inc., founded in 1987 and based in Sunnyvale, California, develops, manufactures, and markets electronic components and systems based on superconductors for applications in the worldwide telecommunications market. For many applications, the unique properties of superconductors offer significant performance advantages over products based on conventional copper electronic components. These advantages can provide improved price/performance at the system level because of enhanced sensitivity and efficiency as well as reduced size and weight.
