keith---i know a lot of us have been to 'vegas, but some like tom and other "cheeseheads" might have not.
fwiw, remember, 'vegas is a CASUAL resort town that tolerates dress-up. in other words, their is just about no where you can't go in a pair of casual pants and golf shirt. however, if anyone wants to "dress to the nines" you won't feel out of place at all.
you are MUCH better off using taxis unless you're planing side trips out of the strip area. traffic is a nightmare. moving sidewalks are now available along a great deal of the major hotel frontage. everything and anything is available 24 hours a day.
by mid may, in all likelihood, the temperatures will probably be in the 80's during the day. light weight jackets or sweaters will probably still be needed if you're planing to be outdoors after sunset. remember, this is the middle of the desert. usually, somewhat windy as well.
fast food to the most exotic cuisine is available in great abundance and usually at fairly reasonable prices. buffets are popular and their are buffets and then their are BUFFETS. the RIO is famous for theirs and after that, it's best to check them out before you give them a try.
the newer hotels, NYNY, MANDALAY BAY, VENETIAN, BELLAGIO, MONTE CARLO all offer some interesting "free" attractions such as the "canals of venice" at the venetian. some slightly older places all offer up free fare such as the pirate ship show at TREASURE ISLAND or the white tiger exhibit at the MIRAGE.
all in all, something for everyone. and, if you do like to gamble i would advice you to join the casino's "club." they'll issue you a card for free that will track your play and qualify you for prizes ranging from a free meal to a free room.
all hotels have lounges that feature good entertainment where you can sit and nurse a drink and be entertained for as long as you like. most of the major shows require reservations and i would advice to call ahead to do so.
only show i've seen recently is MYSTERE at TREASURE ISLAND. WELL WORTH your time and money. it is a version of cirque de solie. no drinking or eating as you're in an arena type seating. but, you're mouth will be open wide in awe throughout this show.
looking forward to matching the faces with the names.
VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!
