Philips FDS, DuPont to develop plastic polymer-OLEDs

Philips Flat Display Systems and DuPont iTechnologies on Wednesday agreed to jointly develop plastic polymer organic light-emitting diode (poly-OLED) flat-panel displays.
The deal comes on the heels of DuPont's recent acquisition of Uniax Corp., a poly-OLED company based in Santa Barbara, Calif., which was partly owned by Philips FDS. As part of the deal, Philips FDS sold its minority stake in Uniax to DuPont, Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Although fully divested, Philips FDS will become a licensee of DuPont iTechnologies' newly acquired poly-OLED technology.
Philips manufactures poly-OLED displays at its own plant in the Netherlands. The displays are targeted at the handheld market.
Matt Medeiros, chairman of Philips FDS, San Jose, said poly-OLED allows displays to be made using either glass or plastic and other flexible substrates. He said the displays consume less power than other FPDs, operate at a wide range of temperatures (down to -40 degrees C), and cost less to produce.
