Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS):

Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS) is a cost-effective, high-speed competitive alternative to digital subscriber line (DSL) service and cable modem service. Serving as another "pipe" to reach the customer, MMDS delivers wireless broadband services to "fixed" customer locations (so-called fixed wireless service).

Operating in the 2.1 and 2.5-2.7 Gigahertz (Ghz) range, MMDS historically has been used for one-way "wireless cable" video services and distance learning programs. MCI WorldCom gained access to MMDS spectrum by acquiring CAI Wireless, Wireless One, CS Wireless and Prime One/TeleTV. Sprint, too, has access to MMDS spectrum through its acquisitions of People?s Choice, American Telecasting, Wireless Broadcasting, Nashville Cable Joint Venture and VideoTron.

In 1998, the FCC permitted two-way operations in the MMDS spectrum as a way to promote competition against DSL and cable modems for high-speed services. The FCC soon will accept licenses for two-way services in each MMDS market. By late 2000, MCI WorldCom will roll out commercial wireless broadband service in several markets once FCC authority is received.

One of the competitive strengths of using MMDS radio spectrum is rapid market entry. A single MMDS tower will broadcast up to 35 miles in certain markets and deliver up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) of broadband capacity. When commercially available, MCI WorldCom will offer scaleable bandwidth to meet each customer?s needs. Unlike some other radio frequencies, MMDS spectrum is relatively immune to weather effects and enables certain network configurations and technologies to be used to alleviate line-of-sight conditions.

While no single technology can satisfy all customers, MMDS technology provides the flexibility to reach rural and urban markets through single-cell designs depending on factors such as terrain and population density. MMDS also serves as a transition technology in markets where MCI WorldCom continues to build out its data and voice networks.
