Just had a convo with one of the people at Schwab who service my account

He told me that the magnitude of forced liquidations due to margin calls was huge. Their select service is called Signature Platinum or some thing on those lines -- they represent the higher equity accounts who get the special treatment. What was amazing to me is that about 70% of these individuals use margin -- and that many of them use it to the hilt! This surprised me since I had assumed that these individuals are less likely to take that sort of risk.

When the market turned the way it did, there was very little give and there was massive liquidation of positions.
