< you'd find less margin at the full commission houses>

You may have a point there, when I consolidated many of my accounts into Merrill my friend there who handles it told me he wanted to reduce the amount of margin I had outstanding on equities.

He felt, first of all, that ML's Margin costs were too high. So I went with that and reduced it to zero. I suppose if I had left it at the other houses it never would have been suggested to me, and my time was pre-occupied with S&P trading so it would not happen on my initiative either.

As you say, I was not in the mood to send in a check whenever I wanted to invest nor was I about to leave a large amount of Cash idle so margin became a habit.....sort of like smoking cigarettes or posting on Silicon Investor.
