JF... Re: GM cooler on GE MRI systems. Coolers have been used for some time now (15? years) to eliminate liquid nitrogen boil-off and to provide an additional heat sink in the 10 degree Kelvin area to intercept structural heat leaks, heat leaks in the electrical leads and as an additional radiation shield to minimize the liquid helium boil-off rate. If the magnet operates at 4.2K, the boiling point of liquid helium, then you would have to make a trade off between an oversized refrigerator for a reasonable cool-down time of the large magnet mass or a long cool-down time for a refrigerator sized to maintain the operating thermal load. Would be interesting to know the magnet operating temperature. Regards..jtj
