I agree about using a GM cooler to cool down a big magnet is not the way to go. Maybe they just use the cooler to take it from 77K?

I had dinner with my friend who mentioned the "no-LHe" MRI last night. He said it just uses ONE GM to operate the MRI. He heard about it at a conference in the cryo field. We also talked about pulse tubes. Pretty exciting stuff!

I'm not sure where HELX is on the big GM coolers or pulse tubes. I imagine they are working on it.
