Maybe not all that funny, but definitely something to think about: How many sex partners have YOU had?

My son and I were watching one of those sexuality shows the other night, narrated by Kathleen Turner. At one point, she breathlessly announced that men had claimed an average of 12 sex partners, and women 6. Ok, no big deal.

My son chirped in "Dad can that be right? Shouldn't the number be the same?". I thought about it. He's right. Consider a sample of 10 men and 10 women, 2 of the women have sex with all of the men (sluts!) and the other 8 women are celibate. That makes an average of 2 sex partners for the men and (2*10+8*0)/10=2 for the women!

More basically, count the total number of first time unions between men and women, divide by the populations of each, and the average number of sex partners have to be about the same (women comprise 50.4% of the population, so the numbers won't be exact).

So, either one or more of the sexes consistently lies about their number of partners, or men and women have different ideas of what constitutes sex. I personally have had sex with 7 3/4 women.
