PROCESS

The MRTI technology can be divided into two main categories: Dezincing and Electrowinning. Dezincing is the process of removing the zinc (galvanized coating) from steel. Electrowinning is the process of recovering the zinc through an electrochemical process. Both processes are viable on their own but together they make for a recycling process that is beneficial to the company as well as to the environment.

Dezincing

Dezincing is accomplished by submersing the galvanized scrap steel in a hot caustic solution. Through a galvanic process (rapid rusting of the zinc), the zinc is removed from the steel and is in solution not as zinc dust but as sodium zincate ions. Once the scrap is zinc free, the steel is rinsed with water as allowed to drain (dry) before shipment to a black scrap (zinc free) end user. All of the rinse water is collected and reused in the dezincing process.

The only waste product of the dezincing process is the dirt on the scrap. Since the zinc is "dissolved" in the caustic this allows for the filtering and treatment of the caustic solution without the removal of the zinc. The dirt is filtered out and is safe for land fill disposal. After the solution is dirt free it is send for ion removal or the removal of metals from the solution other than zinc (i.e., lead, aluminum, copper, iron and tin). Without the "cleaning up process" being done the zinc that would be grown later would be too impure for direct sale into the zinc market. Once this is accomplished the solution is ready for electrowinning.

Electrowinning

Electrowinning is accomplished by applying power to the cleaned solution. Rectifiers are used to apply a 2.660 (minimal) voltage between the anode and the cathode. The amount of amps that travel between the anodes determines the amount of zinc that will be produced. For every constant 1000 amps approximately 2.63 pounds of zinc will be produced per hour at the cathode. Always when power is applied to water solution hydrolysis (the production of hydrogen and oxygen from water) will occur. A delicate balance of volts to amps must be maintained as not to waste electricity in the hydrolysis of water instead of the growing of zinc.

Once the zinc grows it is collected, washed, dried and possibly milled to produce a fine powder. The purity of the zinc is of "prime western grade" and is very saleable on the market as a powder.

The solution which is now low on zinc is sent back to the dezincing process for reuse in removing the zinc from the scrap steel.
