"The Largest Zinc Mine in the World"

The application of zinc to steel to inhibit corrosion has created a rapidly growing market for zinc over the last two decades. The price for this development is that in the scrap industry it is now very difficult to purchase bundles free from zinc contamination and this has caused significant problems for melt shops in the iron and steel industries. These shops much prefer clean black scrap and suffer costly operational and environmental consequences when using zinc contaminated material.

MRTI and its predecessor companies have developed in partnership with the US Department of Energy and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) a patented process which removes zinc coatings from scrap steel recovering a high grade powdered zinc and premium value black scrap.

Typically the process adds value to zinc contaminated scrap of circa $50 per ton.

Development of the process has been expensive and took longer than expected. In order to complete development of the first production facility in the USA the technology was transferred in December 1998 to a 50% owned joint venture company named Metals Investment Trust, Ltd. (MITL). MRTI provided its technology and MITL provided $4,000,000 in cash.
