Teradyne second-quarter profit more than triples

BOSTON, July 18 (Reuters) - Teradyne Inc. (NYSE:TER - news), the leading maker of testing
equipment for the semiconductor industry, said on Tuesday its second-quarter earnings more
than tripled, beating analysts' estimates on the heels of record-breaking demand for electronic
components.

Boston-based Teradyne said earnings climbed to $137.6 million, or 76 cents per diluted share, compared with earnings of $18
million, or 20 cents, a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial on average estimated the company would
earn 74 cents a share.

Net sales rose 89 percent to about $759 million from $401 million a year earlier.

Teradyne shares closed down 5-3/8 at 72-7/8 Tuesday in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, before earnings were released.
Semiconductor issues on the whole were weak on the day after an influential Merrill Lynch strategist advised investors to lighten
their emphasis on the chip sector.

The semiconductor industry has been on a strong upward growth trend since late last year, reflecting a rebound from a slump that
dated to November 1997. The industry is notorious for its boom-to-bust cycles.
