Rather than dribble this research news on me -- which I DO appreciate -- maybe it would be more efficient if you had some links in this direction. I would be a while searching, as I don't even know what key words to use. As you know, that's the main secret of successful searches.

Anyway, I was thinking one could take a bunch of small lenses and organize them into a segment of a sphere; beams come from inside and lenses are focused on the chip below. It becomes a matter of how many beams can be crowded together. Might look like the helmet Spock wore when he was shanghaied as The Controller for a planetful of wayward women. But I'm just fantasizing, obviously. And it sounds like what ETEC is trying to do, with maybe an extra step.
