JDN, Don't exactly believe that. There was no ideological reason to block the merger. I believe they misunderstood the nature of consolidation in telecom regarding competition. Now that it is clear how their action affected the three leading American telecoms negatively, and made them all vulnerable to foreign takeover, they may realize their mistake. Better late than never.
There are enough corporate targets to attack in oil, tobacco and tires to satisfy these folks. WCOM/SPRINT was doing the US a competitive favor in that merger and even if it wasnt recognizable to them then, it certainly should be by now. This deal may be ressurrected.
