There are ways to roam between access points on a campus. Cisco is doing that now with the Aironet product. But on a ISP scale, it simply isn't practical.

The problem with the current cellular network is the bandwidth is very limited...gets back to the notion that you can have either bandwidth or distance, but not both.

As I mentioned, I do have a wireless LAN in my home. If 3 of my neighbors decided to also have wireless LANs in their home, I would have serious degradation since I am within the 350 ft limit defined by 802.11b and at least one of their channels would overlap with mine. This is one of the issues with 802.11 in public airspace, it is unlicensed and there are products out there that are transmitting on the same ISM band that 802.11 operates on. So I could go into BIFS broadcast radius, set up my own little omnidirectional antenna and step on what they perceive as their bandwidth and they couldn't do a damn thing about it. And as you probably know, 802.11 is not the most secure standard out there. They had better have some serious firewalls where the air meets copper.
