Hi Jack, So, what you are interested in is a higher level "search engine" that could tie together current and historical posts that follow the same general family of thought. I've only used SI's search function on the names or symbols of equities so far. I've never tried to do anything more complex.
SI does have a "related subjects" file on many boards. I don't know how this is formed, however.
Let's say we wanted to look at all the posts that had something to do with "Time VS GTC Orders" but want to limit it to the AIM thread or other discussions where AIM has been used. In other words, only AIM related discussions of the subject in question, but not limited to just the AIM BB. SI would need a search engine that was capable of tracking related subjects and then divining relevant content. Some form of "content analysis."
Are there any existing search engines that work at this level? Are those engines able to look at just one host, such as SI? I don't know enough about them to have an answer. I use Infoseek (now GO.Com) to do some searches and I know from people's correspondence that they find my AIM site with search engines. I believe InfoSeek draws in SI threads with the same wording, for instance "Lichello" will hit my site, PCA's, Newport's, RFH's, your ThinkAlong, and others and also pick up SI's thread on AIM or other places that Mr. L's name is mentioned.
I've never tried much higher level searches with Infoseek. I know that they have added some extras in the last year or two where you can click on "More of This Type" or on "More from the Same Site" and get further.
I propose that I copy your post to the SI folks and see what their response might be. They always seem to like new ideas. Lemonhead suggested they have a "Member Events" page and it appeared quickly and with the AIM 2000 meeting as the first listing. Since then they've had their own meeting at the SF MONEY SHOW. So, it appears they are responsive.
I'll do this now and we'll see how they respond.
Best regards, Tom |
