What is MPLS?
MPLS is a set of communication protocols that deliver quality of service and flexibility in IP networks. In the past, network service providers were constrained to offer the same level of service to all users, regardless of the application or quality of service requirements. For example, voice traffic, which requires minimal latency, would typically be delayed in the network longer than the voice application could tolerate due to bandwidth congestion, and would be discarded. Using MPLS techniques, the network infrastructure can intelligently recognize traffic such as voice and video that requires low latency, so the traffic is prioritized through the network to the end user.
MPLS also enables network equipment providers to define varying levels of service, and control the network to guarantee the level of service. The result is a more effective use of network resources and the possibility for structured pricing strategies depending on the defined levels of service.
