Virata helps companies that have gotta lotta data to send.
The company makes communications processor chips
used in digital subscriber line equipment, which enables
phone companies to offer high-speed networking over
copper phone lines. Virata's ATOM family of
application-specific standard products and its Proton line of
application-specific integrated circuits are used in such
networking devices as PC and cable modems, gateways,
and routers. The company, which outsources its
manufacturing, counts Com21 (nearly 25% of sales), Orckit
Communications (about 15%), and Siemens among its
customers. Shareholders include Oak Investment Partners
(14%), Oracle (13%), and New Enterprise Associates.
