THE TEN NEW BELLWETHERS
Few expected that one consequence of the Web architecture wave taking off far more
quickly than the client/server wave would be that the gorillas and chimps would be
identified far more quickly. We've identified a list of ten companies that have the best shot
at achieving bellwether status as a result of Web expansion. It includes BEA Systems
(Nasdaq: BEAS), Check Point Software Technologies (Nasdaq: CHKP), Brocade
Communications (Nasdaq: BRCD), Ciena (Nasdaq: CIEN), i2 Technologies (Nasdaq:
ITWO), JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU), Juniper Networks (Nasdaq: JNPR), Siebel Systems
(Nasdaq: SEBL), Verisign (Nasdaq: VRSN), and Veritas Software (Nasdaq: VRTS).

On average, these companies are already as large as most of the companies that became
bellwethers as a result of the client/server expansion of 1998. But they are growing nearly
twice as fast as their counterparts were 12 years ago. In 1988, the growth rates for the
emerging client/server bellwethers were already slowing. By contrast, the revenue growth
of the companies in our list of potential bellwethers is not decelerating.
