brass-monkeys adj British

extremely cold. A shortening of 'brass-monkey time' or 'brass-monkey weather', this phrase refers to the widely known vulgar saying 'cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!'. A rather far-fetched explanation of the catchphrase is that a 'brass monkey' was a rack of cannonballs on board a warship.
