CSCO will help WCOM in MMDS,because the playground in router business is getting smaller...JNPR fast routers might be a standard soon. WCOM-CSCO and AT&T-LU....looks like a chess play to me. And MMDS is quietly growing...soon, a bigger competition to DSL. To refresh the news about MMDS....from my post, Dec 16 WCOM, a special edition for insiders...
This is important... A positive outlook on the future of MMDS. 17% market share predicted for alternative broadband systems by 2004 "You're about to witness an explosion of satellite offerings and MMDS offerings," says Michael Greeson, consulting analyst for Parks Associates. "Launches will occur in the fourth quarter of 2000 and the first quarter of 2001. The 17 percent market share represents a minor penetration for these services by 2004. The FCC reclassified the ITSF spectrum, and auctioned a ton of it off. Companies like Sprint [FON] and MCI WorldCom [WCOM] and Nucentrix [Broadband Networks] bought a ton of it."
WorldCom has rolled out MMDS in Memphis, Tenn., and the company is beginning a national deployment. The carrier has filed 60 FCC applications to establish two-way MMDS services in markets across the country. Services could be installed in 60 markets by year-end 2001
"MMDS and satellite service may be very competitive with cable and DSL," "MMDS will be competitive, along with satellite services like DirecPC and EchoStar, and EchoStar's partner, Gilat2Home. The argument is MMDS and satellite will have a very huge footprint by flipping a switch
