And as someone who was in Columbia grad school during the 1968 strike, I can attest to the validity of your picture of the "radical left" during that time. (I particularly remember some poor student's being howled down at a meeting, after he identified himself as a "liberal".)

However, that "radical left" -- mostly well-to-do kids who had learned about radicalism from books -- was definitely out of touch with the Old Left, whose radicalism had grown out of experience, "real life," as it were.

So it goes...
