My wife's an architect and I've built a number of houses.

#1- See other houses that your architect has designed and understand what yours will look like...In and Out...!
#2- Get referances from your builder, check them out and see some of their work.
Even if it's your best friend...!
#3- My advise also includes seeing a lawyer...! Draw up agreement papers for your architect and builder to sign on costs and time schedual.
#4- Expect and plan for cost over-runs of at least 20-25%
#5- Have insurance in place Before the building goes up. Especially workmen's compensation and liability against injury and a healthy clause for medical pay outs.

NH is notorious for builders saying they have these in place and DON"T. You will ultimately be responsible, when Joe the roofing subcontractor's inexperienced help, breaks his back falling off your roof.

I wouldn't build a house in NH without all of these conditions in place. Even if my brother was both the architect and contractor.

It's a Lot of Fun - Tremendous amount of Work and Rewarding.
