I don't mean to say anything about any doctor in particular, but I think one of the things that happened to make insurance companies so difficult to deal with was the doctors themselves. Let me give you a few "for instances" about what I am talking about.

1. Sometimes doctors know that the procedure or treatment the patient wants or needs isn't scheduled for reimbursement, so they put down the code for something else. Or they exaggerate the patient's medical condition to make sure there is reimbursement.

2. Sometimes doctors know that the insurance co. will only pay a certain amount for a procedure or treatment, say 80%, so they bill the insurance co. for $1000 for something that costs $800, and write off the rest.

3. Some doctors bill insurance companies for things they never did - this is really bad in the Medicare biz.

4. Some health care providers - chiroquackters are the worst - keep having the patient return for more treatment, and milk it for as long as they possibly can.

I've seen all of the above many times.

Another thing doctors sometimes do that is less than ethical, IMO, is certify patients as being disabled just to be nice. Doctors want to be helpful, and there is a sort of "us against them" mentality.

If doctors could lose their licenses for unethical billing practices like lawyers can, maybe this wouldn't be so rampant - of course lawyers pull scams, too. I think it is the bad apples that have ruined it for everyone.
