Hurricane parties are fun, because everyone gets lightheaded when the pressure drops. This is a true fact, even though it may sound screwy. Hurricane Andrew didn't do much to New Orleans, did it? You really get the full effect when it's a big storm. It's fun when the lights go out and you have to light the candles and the hurricane lamps, and sit around and listen to the wind howling. Most of the time nothing happens except maybe some awnings get torn down and some garbage cans get rolled down the street. Not so fun if you live near the ocean, then you can get wave damage and that's really dangerous. I never liked being below sea level, especially surrounded by water that was higher than ground level. Last August I went fishing with my dad out of Port Eads, where the Eads jetties keep the channel from silting up, and you can't tell where the land, water, and ocean begin and end. Then I visited Lake Itasca in September, where the Mississippi River begins, and walked through it from bank to bank, it was just a little stream about knee high. So I saw the beginning and the end less than a month apart.
