I was taking a break in my office, and decided to flip through some channels to see if anything else was on besides the depressing market coverage of CNBC. I stumbled upon the image of a young woman with statistics displayed across the bottom of the screen: 25 years old, Physical Education Teacher, from Oregon. She looked like quite a nice person and I wondered what she did. Turns out, the program featured Lumberjack competitions, and she was a competitor. She certainly didn’t look the stereotype of a Lumberjack, so I watched a moment to see what she did. She threw axes. Yes! She threw axes at a wooden target: And she was really good at it too. I laughed.

These axes were double headed affairs, and appeared as either chrome plated or highly polished. The competitors seemed to have leather cases for them, either to protect the axe or themselves: I don’t know which. When thrown, they would hold the thing in both hands and swing it high above their head. The target appeared about ten feet away.

At this very moment, The Commander was walking by and heard me. He poked his head through the door and asked what the joke was. I told him to come in and watch this for a moment. She made her third and last throw. A bullseye! In a split second, thanks to TV editing, she was being interviewed. She said that she’s been axe throwing for years, and that she practices an hour every day. I commented, mostly to myself, but evidentially loud enough to be heard, that I wondered whatever would motivate her to devote so much time and effort toward throwing an axe. The Commander’s instant response was “Maybe her mother cooks liver like your sister.”

...liver, and I won't eat that...

Cheers, PW.
