I do like Progresso soups - will look at the non-meat ones
Progresso Lentil soup is excellent, I couldn't live without it for those occasions when the refrigerator is empty! Unlike most soups, it has no MSG, which is important for most of us to avoid. Always read the labels.
what's the story on farm fed/raised salmon?
In his latest book, Eating Well for Optimum Health, Andrew Weil says that "Fish-farming has its own problems...Farmed fish live in unnaturally crowded pens and are susceptible to diseases as a result. Farmers routinely give them antibiotics....Furthermore, unless the feed given to farmed fish is thoughtfully designed, their nutritional value may be less than that of their wild counterparts. Farmed salmon contain fewer omega-3 fatty acids than wild salmon unless they get supplements of algae rich in those vital nutrients."
However, for those of us who are unable to get the wild coldwater fatty fish in the wild during many months, Weil believes that it's better to eat farm-raised salmon than no salmon at all.
Trying to eat well is always a tradeoff. No food is perfect, unless you grow your own organic vegetables . It's always looking for the lesser of two evils.....
I buy my fish from Whole Foods/Bread & Circus, where they supposedly only buy from select fish farms, with no antibiotics, etc. Every week, I look at their fish board to choose the wild salmon or arctic char (a very similar fish) if it's available, even though it's a dollar or two a pound more expensive.
Eating well is hard work. And costly, but it's worth it. Before I became a Weil disciple, I was sick all the time. I had all sorts of maladies: chronic bronchitis, asthma, neuromuscular problems, lots of prescription drugs. Then one day I spotted the book 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. I thought, "I can do anything for 8 weeks." I bought the book and it changed my life. All of my health problems disappeared, even 95% of my allergies. I don't even get the flu. Ever. No more prescription drugs. Without even trying to, I also gradually lost 25 unneeded pounds.
I did have a cold this fall, though. First one in years. I must have slipped <g>.
