There's a lot of wisdom in the Orthodox fasting rules. For example, the prohibition against shellfish is extremely sound, since not only do they scoop up all sorts of toxins, but even cooked shellfish are also carriers of viral and bacterial infections.

I only got food poisoning once in my life, about 15 years ago, and it was after eating a seafood platter (fried clams and such). That did it for me :)
