I feel a little like a midget in a Nudist Camp writing about school shootings: I'm running around putting my nose where it doesn't belong.

In my opinion, these are desperate actions, taken because the person sees no workable alternative to resolving the situation in which they find themselves. Adults have a dismal record when it comes to dealing with, or even understanding, the difficulties faced by young people: Our worlds differ. Faced with the choice of allowing the conditions they find intolerable to continue or taking some action that is hoped will end the impasse, young people are forced to choose between two very unappealing alternatives. Most will choose to work within societies norms, even if apparently ineffectual, while a small minority will follow another route.

If I’m correct, the school shootings are a symptom of some deeper problems facing teens. Like any disease, the ultimate cure comes from successfully treating the underlying illness, and not from masking the outward symptoms. A first step could be the recognition that the problem stems from adult failures. We must begin by listening to cries for help. Listening leads to understanding. We cannot find solutions while remaining in darkness.

Cheers, PW.
