Haqi, today is a sad day. Dale Hamm died. He tried to sell me 30 acres of river bottom for $10,000, problem was it belonged to the state of Illinois. He also rented the same ground out to two different parties for a grand each. Funny but no one minded.

He lived in a tiny river town and did construction in the summer but come fall he turned to poaching, his natural calling. He also had a tavern and a couple of gambling ventures in years past. Back in the depression he guided and sold ducks to the mob out of Chicago.

Dale never had a new gun or fishing pole in his life, but he poached some of the most expensive hunting clubs in the US. The tavern he had was built on the hull of a burned out house boat. In the 50s he heard about a house boat burning in Chicago, loaded his jon boat in his pickup and drove up there. Bought the hull for scrap prices, parked his truck on the hull and towed the whole thing 175 miles down the Illinois River with a jon boat and a 20 horse motor. Built his tavern on that hull.

Just some of the things he had to do to stay alive. Now I really hate the rich guys who shoot over their limits or break the rules in any way. Dale was just doing what he had to do to stay alive. I doubt he ever bought a drink in his life. He had so many stories the visiting city boys kept 'em coming just to listen. He didn't buy breakfast during duck season, I bought them all.
