Elmer,

Maybe so but it's also listed by Dell, Gateway and IBM.

But Dell and IBM also listed the 1 GHz and 1.13 GHz P3, and it turned out that that Intel delivered 40 units on 1.13 to IBM, and during the early stages of paper launch of 1.0 GHz, IBM was receiving 7 units per week, according to a post of someone who was ordering one.

This was a lousy launch, you can't deny it. The distributor channel has not received any 1.7 GHz CPUs, and there is a reason for it: Intel doesn't have enough of these parts, even though there is very low demand. The only explanation I can see is that the bin splits are poor. But I am just guessing. I have to say that I have no idea what's going on here. If you have a theory, let me hear it.

I received an e-mail from a lurker: Message 15706664 who speculates that the 1.7 GHz is just a cover for the real reason, which is that Intel wants to cut 1.3 - 1.5 GHz parts to sub-300 price without making it look like a price war. But it is a price war, an it is one reason why I sold my entire AMD position today. I am going to wait on the sideline until the smoke clears.

Joe

PS: Drew Peck on CNBC tomorrow, so guess what the story will be tomorrow.
