From truly icky restaurant horror stories, someone writes:

I remember an incident in the early 1980s, when I worked at an upper class restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia. The manager caught one of the food prep crew using a toilet bowl plunger to stir the 10gal bucket of cole slaw. When asked why he used the toilet bowel plunger instead of putting on the disposable gloves, he replied he couldn't read English very well nor had he been properly taught. When asked how long he had been using the toilet bowl plunger, he replied 3 months. You truly have no idea just how your food was prepared, or how competent the person preparing your food is to begin with.
