A Singapore resident wrote to me about his Starbucks' experience. (BTW, Singapore lies very near the Equator and is very hot and humid everyday.)

hello uncle!

my sentiments exactly!!!

i pay about 80-90 cts per cup of kopi peng (iced coffee) or 50-60 cts for kopi 'o' (black coffee) at the coffee stalls but pay a lot more at starbucks/coffeebean thingy.

the coffee shop's coffee are stronger and taste better and have easy names to remember -kopi 'o' or kopi peng, unlike those 'branded' places which have names i cannot identify with - what's a mocha, latte etc? the only thing i do know is capuccino. but i can get the coffee shops to add a couple of spoonfulls of milo to my coffee for 30cts more and u've got it. capucinno is about 4-5 dollars here!!

the people say it's the ambience thingy. But I say the only difference is that the place is air- conditioned and usually in a crowded shopping plaza e.g. orchard rd. so what's so nice about a air-conditioned crowded plaza where u cannot even hear yourself think?

ok! coffee shops aren't air-conditioned, but at least they are not as crowded and some of them do have a tv or 2 around for your viewing pleasure. better tables and chairs? what's the diff? do you go to a place to appreciate the furniture or the coffee itself? besides... i am a smoker.... you cannot smoke at starbucks or coffee bean. So what is smoking without coffee and vice versa if one is a smoker?

oh yes! one indelible experience going into a coffee bar. heard a lot about expresso see.... so went and ordered a double shot (heard that it was the strongest coffee around). cost me almost $5. what did i get? a tiny little cup of coffee amounting to 1 mouthful. daylight robbery!!!!

well i don't know about you..... but i still swear by the ordinary coffee shop's coffee for complete satisfaction.
