Mich. Officer Kills Rogue Ostrich

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 10:30 p.m. ET

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- A 300-pound ostrich on the lam for three days
was shot dead Saturday by an animal control officer as it tried to escape through
a cow pasture.

The bird had charged at an animal control officer, said Animal control officer Jim
Gorlock who fired the shot.

``We tried to corral it into the barn, but it ran through an electric fence and was
darting all over the place where the cows were,'' Gorlock said.

The bird was one of four ostriches that apparently escaped from a farm where
officers found a hole in a fence.

Two of the birds were captured near the farm Friday night and returned home.
The fourth bird, a younger 200-pound male, was taken to an animal sanctuary.

Ostriches cannot fly but can run at least 40 mph. They are raised for their meat,
which tastes like beef with little fat or cholesterol, and high-quality leather.
