I just noticed termites in our dirt recently. I had never seen termites in dirt in my life - certainly not here. I saw them for the first time when I dumped out a planter when the plant died. The dirt was from Home Depot and the plant was from an herb nursery here in Virginia. Can't remember whether that was one of the planters I took inside last winter, but now I am afraid to take any of them in.

I thought we were safe because the bottom floor is concrete and brick and no wood is touching the ground, but recently found out that termites may still be able to get into the house. The siding is on the second floor from the front of the house, third floor from the back of the house (walk-out basement.)

So thanks for posting the "do-it-yourself" link, it reminded me to do something.

Nick said he saw a flying ant a couple of days ago. Yikes.
