I wonder if the insects which stung you were really dirt/mud daubers? My understanding is that they don't sting unless trapped. We call them dirt daubers - they are black, and they are not social. I don't interfere with their nests even though they usually nest on my windowsills. As you say, they eat other insects.

There are red paper wasps in Mississippi, which are social, and aggressive.

You really can't depend on good ol' boys for insect identification. I will never forget the Mississippi boy who told me that the red ants in the trunk of my parents care were iron ants, and that they were red because eat iron:

"Them's arn aints. They eats arn."

Perfectly serious, too. I suspect someone played a joke on him and he fell for it.
