As far as I know the Damascene process still uses PVD for the "seed" layers although they can wet plate the remaining copper.
PVD is good for us since it requires a vacuum. Wet plating... Well, let's hope they can't figure out how to start without using a PVD layer <g>.

BTW, my knowledge of the copper deposition processes is very cursory.
