OK, I finally got a response from Virginia Tech. Guy must have been on vacation.-g-

I sent him the link to your website photo inside the wall, and jpgs of my own photo of inside the wall, and a dead insect, and he responded that what we had in our walls was yellow jackets. The URL he sent is not very helpful, but anyway my own nightmare seems to be over. It does creep me out that I thought that the house was a barrier between me and the outside world, but the yellow jackets turned the house into a nesting area.

The fact that it happened to your mother and your sister is something I find curiously comforting, I guess because I don't feel singled out knowing it happened to complete strangers on the other side of the continent.
